5 Simple steps to Unlock Your
Painting Mojo

Demo'ing a painting technique  at  Blooms Brsbane Painting Workshop

Becoming a productive artist creating great work is more than about putting paint on the canvas. What you think up top matters too

Hi I’m Jacqueline Coates an artist of 30 years and a teacher for 16 years and the creator of the Jacqueline Coates Blooms Painting Method® that has helped thousands of people to rapidly unlock their creative skills and talent and take creativity to whole new level

With a group of my Make Money From Art Students back in 2013

Today I want to talk about a subtle killer of creativity that can stop you before you even have a go

Have you ever had a cupboard stuffed full of junk, then decided to spring clean and chuck the old stuff you don’t need anymore, and as a result reclaimed a sparkling new space you can use again in a new way?

Spring cleaning your thinking about your art is much the same.

When we examine old ideas that no longer serve us, we can move forward into a sparkling new space. Getting rid of heavy old ideas holding us back releases us into new energy and we feel like painting.

Even computers get tired and need rebooting and cleaning out. You are no different!
Cleaning up old ideas will get yourself out of the way of your creativity!

It could be time to renovate your thinking!
And it’s easy to do.
As a result you can reboot your enthusiasm and feel good feelings and get on with creating!

The good news it is easier than you think to change your own mind and have a good clean up.

Clean up stinking thinking that keeps you from creating!

If we have accidentally adopted a thought that’s getting in the way of creating …
we can actually reset the dials and replace that thought with a more positive one that is much nicer to live with and more encouraging to get producing the art we want to make.

Whatever you think you get to be right.

If you think you can’t, you are right.
If you think you can, you are right.

CHOOSE YOUR TEAM! THE GOOD GUYS OR THE BAD GUYS?

It takes about the same amount of energy to adopt either of these thoughts although choosing the more positive thought will definitely give you more energy, make you feel lighter and more enthusiastic, ready to step up, and likely to be in action. Who wants to be on the feel good team? MEEEEEE!!

Having fun teaching at the Sydney Blooms Painting Workshop

SHADOWY THOUGHTS MAKE US FEEL LIKE CRAP AND LOWER THE ENERGY WE HAVE AVAILABLE FOR CREATING GREAT STUFF

Choosing the shadowy thought that you can’t do something most likely brings with it feelings of shame and not deserving when it’s at odds with your true desires to create. This part of ourselves is guaranteed to keep you small and hiding out. It doesn’t like new experiences or risk. It will stop you from reaching for your dreams. It’s also about not allowing you to participate Everyone else can but no not you See how mean it is?

Which kind of thought is active right now in relation to your creativity?

For those of you sagely saying… Oh, I don’t have any of that….

Tune in a little more. If you are not creating everything you want with your art or your life chances are you have some old thoughts that are holding you back!

DON’T PANIC HERE’S WHERE I COME TO YOUR EMOTIONAL RESCUE!

We all want to create right? If you admitted to having the shadowy unhelpful sort of thoughts sometimes let’s see what we can do about that and get going with replacing it with a better thought that serves you well. It’s a bit like getting rid of junk in the email inbox. You are selective with that right? Let’s be selective with what we choose to believe about ourselves.

Get yourself a cheapie diary, or some spare paper laying about and when you notice those insidious thoughts creeping in, simply write them down word for word.
Capture that dark squirm-making thought on paper and look at it for what it is; a shadowy old thought that needs a good spring clean.

We are going to replace it with a new thought that will be much nicer to live with. Here is an example. Insert your own case as needs be.

Here are a few examples that would be worth revisiting and remodelling followed by one example I will workshop with you to demo how to release an old thought that is of no use and needs questioning;

  • ·        I’m no painter
  • ·        My brother got all the talent
  • ·        I can’t work and paint I have to wait for the right time
  • ·        There is no time left for me after I take care of the family so how can I paint?
  • ·        I feel guilty doing something for myself
  • ·        What others think of me is terrifying
  • ·        I am likely to fail and I can’t cope with that
  • ·        I can’t afford to paint so I won’t do anything
  • ·        My art teacher said I would never make an artist
Isn’t it time some of these old limiting ideas were challenged?!

Poppies painting during the Blooms Painting Workshop Poppies are vibrant and positive

EXAMPLE
OLD SHADOWY THOUGHT;

My art teacher in high school said I couldn’t paint. He must be right.

LET’S NOW EXAMINE THAT THOUGHT SHALL WE AND SEE IF IT DESERVES TO STICK AROUND ?!

Upon a closer inspection, what sort of teacher were they anyway?

A good art teacher can teach anyone to paint

At my workshops I teach colour You don't have to be born with knowing how to do it!

Being able to paint isn’t about being born with creative talent it’s about learning skills which then enable you to paint. The sooner you learn the skills the quicker you can gain control and confidence painting and the sooner you will feel comfortable to call yourself an artist. Not such a big mystery after all.

Teaching at Glen Iris for the Melbourne Blooms Painting Workshop

Once upon a time you learned how to cook and now you can cook. Painting is the same. You can learn it then decide what you want to do with it.

That teacher hell bent on making your life a misery and telling you that you were no good at art and to give up, was evidently blaming everyone else rather than addressing their own inadequacy to teach, which no doubt came with terrified feelings of powerless and the inability to teach.

That person may have been frightened they’d get found out for being a lousy teacher so getting rid of students who made them look bad was convenient. Ie “ I can’t actually teach anyone how to paint so I will discourage you. I don’t want your results to be my fault or hanging around. If I tell you are bad you will go away”

Now you understand the true dynamics of the situation and that it wasn’t your fault, you can see things differently and change your point of view. How different could things have been if you had enjoyed a nurturing interested teacher?

Learning the essentials skills of how to paint and having fun has everything to do with
whether you feel you can be creative or not

PEOPLE SAY MEAN THINGS WHEN THEY DON’T FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES.
THE MISTAKE YOU MAKE IS TO HAVE THOSE COMMENTS MEAN SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF

The most common time people say terrible things to others is when they don’t feel
good about themselves when you think about it. They forget about it by the day after. For some reason we take these comments as truth long after the moment has passed and have it mean something when it means nothing.

So please don’t take bad comments others make as truth to make decisions in your own life. That would be crazy, right?

Consider forgiving that person for their lack of ability to teach all that time ago. Choose to move on and quit blaming that person for your lack of creative progress.  Agree to stop using what that person said or did to you usually umpteen years ago as a block to your creativity.

Most importantly forgive yourself for agreeing with the unfortunate individual at that time and allowing them be right in your world and your thinking over an untruth.

GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION TO CHANGE YOUR MIND FOR THE BETTER

Now you have taken a look at the true circumstances of where that limiting idea came from, or reviewed a thought that kept you in a rut you may take charge of your own opinion about yourself and change your mind by coming up with a better concept of your creativity. The old point of view has hopefully lost its hold now you can see it for what it is.

Now you can take action.
Being creative can take the form of;

·         go see an inspiring exhibition
get an art movie out of the library,
  • ·        get your camera out and take pictures,
  • ·        read a book and learn something for your art,
  • ·        come to a workshop and get your painting skills sorted out.
  • ·        Seek the best advice you can get that supports you to be able to create
  • .    Be kind to yourself
You can move on. Only you can give yourself permission to do so, no one else.
You alone have the keys to decide what you think and what you do in your life.
What anyone else thinks of you has nothing to do with you. Don’t let it

You can go ahead and get on with what thrilled you in the first place. You have the green lights! Reach for what you want.

As well as learning at a workshop meet like minded others who are also growing
and developing their art all in a  supportive and compassionate environment These delightful
ladies are now graduates of my Make Money From Art Program and artists in their own rights

YOU CAN RENOVATE AND SPRING CLEAN ANY OLD UNHELPFUL THOUGHTS THAT HAVE BEEN HOLDING YOU BACK AT ANYTIME

This can apply to any comment anyone said to you at any time that you have
Showing how to finish off a painting at the Barossa Blooms
accidentally taken on as being true and used it to stop you from reaching for your creative dreams.

The decision made way back then was because advice from an adult seemed true. That person was in a position of power. They no longer have power in your life. You can let it go.

You can probably paint just fine, simply by accessing an experienced teacher that can help you, and be free to explore all of your creative gifts. Isn’t that exciting?
Now let’s create an example of a new thought….
New thought;

‘I am now free to explore my painting. Painting is for anyone willing to learn and give it a go, including me.
I’m giving myself a second chance in better circumstances.’

See how much better that feels? Life is full of possibility again. Yay!

DECIDE TO BE A HAVE, NOT A HAVE NOT

Oil Painting is expressive and fun at Freedom to Paint ( Oils)
No doubt you have your own scenario. If it wasn’t a teacher, maybe a relative or friend who said something unkind, or the parent who favored a different sibling as having talent, or the parent who thought art was a waste of time as a vocation so you never got to have a go at it.

Of course, you know you are an adult NOW but these old thoughts have a way of behaving as though we are not. The thoughts can lurk on the periphery of the mind influencing us. They usually come from a time when we were smaller than everyone else because were not adults back then.

We were not empowered or conscious enough to stick up for ourselves so those ideas got lodged with us without proper inspection for the right to stay and influence us. Time for a spring clean! The fact is, now you are an adult and can make your own decisions. You can put your dreams first if you choose to do so. You get to decide and no one else. You are in charge of your thinking. You are the gatekeeper.

THE SOONER YOU CHOOSE POSITIVE THOUGHTS THAT SUPPORT YOU AND YOUR ART THE SOONER YOU GET TO ENJOY THAT CREATIVE MOJO AND ARTISTIC ENERGY

What will you allow in and keep and what will you dismiss to keep your thoughts and feelings spring cleaned and in great shape?

I suggest you try to notice what you think, as a daily practice.
I have done this for years and it really serves me well.

It means I am less reactive to other people around me. That equals less drama. I get to choose my responses. I get to choose what I think about myself not accept any old opinion about me that comes my way. I have my energies available to be creative and create great stuff in my life & to help others on their way

ENJOY MY NEW BOOK WHICH SHARES HOW I CONNECTED WITH MY CREATIVE MOJO

If you want to learn how I became an artist and the steps I took to be where I am today enjoying my paint brush on a global level, though once upon  time I had no confidence and almost believed my lecturer’s assessment of my work, and nearly gave up, visit www.makemoneyfromartbook.com

and order a copy of my new book which shares how.
staying positive and choosing what I thought was key.

NOTE THE LOW LEVEL TONE OF YOUR SHADOWY THOUGHTS

So you have a shadowy lurking thought, capture it right now and write it down in actual words exactly as you think it.

Often this voice is quite unkind, unreasonable and you wouldn’t talk to a child the way you talk to yourself!!! You wouldn’t hang out with someone who spoke to you like that At least I hope not

As you examine the thought have a look at the logic or rather the lack of it. It will help you disempower the shadowy unhelpful thought so you can bin it!

A STORY TO SHARE
I’ve actually had many students in my workshops who once went to art school, and this
Certainty about your abilities comes from learning and testing
and what you have learned As you can see its worth it!
is more common than you would think…., and not be taught how to paint, so even though they had the chance to learn, those lecturers never shared the basics of how to paint and those students left art school with no confidence and no ability to paint well and found other jobs. It was more of a guessing game in class.

NOT ALL ART TEACHERS SHARE HOW TO PAINT AND NOT ALL ART TEACHERS KNOW HOW TO PAINT

That’s because those lecturers hadn’t worked out how to articulate the how to paint and pass it on to others and possibly were painters themselves being on wages and some were too lazy to bother.
A workshop with me cleans up how to paint within hours of being in my workshop and then builds upon that so you have reliable processes to create. This happens in a matter of days.

FROM I CAN’T TO I CAN

One of those students came to me in 2016 at the Brisbane Blooms Painting Workshop in Brisbane after a 30 year hiatus and was off like a shot and has been painting ever since our encounter 18 months ago not to mention selling lots of stunning paintings.  She’s given up her old job and now does what she loves and there is a Q for her paintings.
For this story there are another ten I could tell you I admire the bravery of these painters to get past their first bad experience

A STUDENT’S SUCCESS STORY- FROM HAVE NOT TO HAVING IT ALL!

Now this grad of my MMFA Program is completely in action with her creative passion. Great work! She gave herself permission to change her mind. ‘I’m loving my painting!’ is so much more positive than the old thought’ I’m no good at this and I can’t have it in my life I’m not good enough’.

Now her thinking and belief is she loves paintings and she’s good at it.  She is right because remember, whatever you choose to think you get to be right! This is reflected by her results and people wanting to buy her paintings.
The universe always reflects back to you what you think.

OTHER REASONS YOU MAY HAVE ADOPTED AN UNHELPFUL
Colour Mixing and showing you how to save thousands
of dollars on paint are features of my teaching
THOUGHT

There have been many students who through no fault of their own, have been deterred from pursuing their dreams before they meet me. There are decades of wasted years is the tragedy. Others have mistakenly agreed with an opinion along the way that they have no creative talent. It doesn’t have to be true. You can change your mind too.

NEW ACTIVITIES CAN MAKE US FEEL UNCERTAIN

When an activity is new and we aren’t sure how to do something we don’t have the certainty we would prefer to have. It’s a bit of an unknown every time we go towards the new thing. Uncomfortable right?
It’s precisely at that moment you have the opportunity to notice what you think because these thoughts make themselves more present at these times when you are willing to take a little risk. They become more vocal. Get that diary out and right down those thoughts that are in opposition to where you want to go.

Ditch the inner bitch!!! Reclaim your MOJO!

Approximately half of my students are total newbies to painting and the others have dabbled or would like a reboot for their creativity  I teach from the ground up thoroughly so the results no matter who you are or where you came from are fabulously democratic Everyone gets great results

Here is a quick recap of the steps;
My 5 TIPS TO SPRING CLEAN YOUR THINKING & RESTORE YOUR CREATIVE MOJO

1.     Write down the unhelpful thought or criticism coming from within.

2.     Examine the logic of the thought. And the lack of truth around it. Write down your new understanding as you review the thought and see it from the point of view of who you are now, as an adult and with all those players involved now in the past with no power over you the adult and the understanding.

Be clear that you are allowed to question and even interrogate those old ideas. Loosen them off just like you would take a spatula to a roasting pan and loosen all the stuck bits.

3.     Remember you are an adult and only you get to choose what thoughts you want to live with. Do you want to keep the old shadowy thought or would you prefer to change it to something that is more loving of you and what you want to do with your creativity? Give yourself permission to change your mind.

4.     Create a positive new thought or statement that supports you.
Write the new thought down and place it on a sticky note on your bathroom mirror.

5.     Now you are free to move on consider what action you will take to get your creativity sorted out and flowing smoothly and to your liking.

Only you can choose what you think of you. Catch hold of those thoughts and give them a good spring clean.

This is my process I use and I hope it helps you too to have more of what you want in your life to your liking! You deserve to have the creativity you want in your life!
